Camp Brooklyn celebrates annual gala

Camp Brooklyn – a not-for-profit organization founded by former Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz to help send less fortunate kids to camp – once again honored its founder at the program’s annual Community Service Award Gala, celebrated on Thursday, October 23.

“It was really wonderful,” lauded Camp Brooklyn Executive Director Debra Garcia. “We raised quite a bit of money and we got to honor two wonderful people, which, of course, was thrilling.”

Founded in 2002, the Camp Brooklyn Fund’s mission is to send economically disadvantaged Brooklyn boys and girls to accredited overnight camps for two weeks at no cost to the camper – granting them the experience of a lifetime. Made possible through fundraisers, sponsorships, grants for program support and personal donations, Camp Brooklyn has been going strong ever since.

This year’s gala honored Markowitz and Gina Argento of Broadway Stages. The evening affair took place at the 40/40 Club within the Barclays Center (620 Atlantic Avenue) from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets included dinner and an open bar as well as access to a silent auction, raffles, and more.

“We really did well with the event, and it was a great time,” said Garcia.

All proceeds went to the Camp Brooklyn Fund.
