To repeat the Bonnies’ 2014 first place Brooklyn-Queens regular season record of 14-2 will be an uphill climb for Fontbonne Head Coach Stephen Oliver this season as he fields a starting five comprised of two seniors, two sophomores and one freshman. Additionally, this will be the first season without either of his two daughters, Jill or Kate, running the team at the point since 2007.
After a pre-season loss to Poly Prep and an opening regular season win over St. Saviour to start the season, Coach Oliver — who is entering his eighth season — optimistically stated, “We’re a very young team this season and we’re getting better each game.”
This season, the team features senior co-captains Adrianna Boumoussa and Jill Nixon at the forward positions along with sophomore co-captain Meaghan Glynn. Sophomore Emily Lind returns at the guard position joined by first time varsity freshman Katie Marquardt from the St. Francis de Sales CYO team.
Hoping that Marquardt can bring leadership to the court at the point position similar to his two daughters, Oliver sees his freshman point guard as “a diamond in the rough.” According to Oliver, “She has a good court sense, handles the ball well and can knock down a three.”
Marquardt’s ability as well as the rest of the young team will be tested when the Bonnies meet one this season’s projected front runners, St. Edmund’s Prep, during the first week of January. The St. Edmund’s game will be followed by a contest with perennial archrival Bishop Kearney.
