NIA welcomes neighborhood in at open house

Brooklynites got the chance to rub elbows and get to know their neighbors a bit better at the annual NIA Community Services Network’s Open House on January 8.

Around 100 residents strolled into the NIA’s Dyker Heights office for the meet and greet, according to Executive Director Rosa Casella.

The NIA, through partnering with schools around the city, provides children with around 30 cost-free after-school programs like cooking classes, test preparation and photography.

“Our services have touched the lives of thousands,” said Casella. “Reaching out and improving the quality of life in our communities is what we do. We help in any way possible.”

Casella said that the NIA’s non-profit services help to build a strong sense of community and character among the city’s children.

“Kids just love to give to other people. They learn about their communities and become better citizens,” Casella said.

With the coming of the new year, the NIA hopes to expand its network of after-school programs.

“The major goal for 2015 is to get more after-school programs for kids. They need them. These kinds of services are essential,” Casella said.
