Vikings snag championship in DHAA play

The Dyker Heights Athletic Association concluded another football season, on a cold and blustery field, at Bay Eighth Street.

Rookie division play saw the Vikings gel at the right time, as they steamrolled through the playoffs. They capped off their championship season by beating the Patriots in the Super Bowl by a 35-14 score.

The two teams had earned the right to face each other with impressive semi-final wins. The Patriots upset the #1 seed Giants with a 7-0 shutout. The Vikings beat the Bears with a 21-7 defensive gem.

In the big game, the Vikings were firing on all cylinders. On offense, their dynamic duo of Filip Drazic and Alec Gonzalez were tremendous. Drazic was the star of the game, as he broke off three touchdown runs of at least 50 yards. The Patriots could not stop him all day long.

Gonzalez had a few big runs to go with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Michael Arndt. Daniel Fogliano had a few big plays, including a 30-yard run for a clutch first down before the half.

Defensively, the Vikings were flying all over the field. Nicholas Cinquini was the defensive player of the game. Cinquini returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown. He also came up with a few big tackles.

The linebacking core of Christian Morban, Mike Repole and Marcus Vargas were their usual solid selves. Repole manned the middle, between the two giant bookends, Morban and Vargas. Salvatore DeMeo was used at many different positions in the various defensive schemes. Drazic, Gonzalez and Arndt played an important part of the defense as well.
