Local pol applauds electronic update to DMV law

Motorists with smartphones or other portable electronic devices will now be allowed to provide proof of insurance coverage to law enforcement or as otherwise needed electronically.

Brooklyn Assemblymember Dov Hikind – who had been trying to get the update made legislatively — thanked the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles on Thursday, May 14 for altering New York State’s vehicle and traffic law to allow the change, which he has been fighting for since 2013.

“No one looks forward to getting pulled over by a policeman for any reason. But even routine matters are often compounded by the inability to produce valid documents,” said Hikind, noting that, now, New York motorists will have peace of mind knowing that they have another option. “While it’s sometimes difficult to find paperwork that you haven’t looked for in six months, the cell phone, for those who rely on it, is usually within reach. Electronic copies of insurance documents will also be the most current.”
