NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Our unsung heroes

This week I would like to shine the spotlight on a very dedicated woman, who works tirelessly behind the scenes for the young people in our neighborhood.

Grace El -Yateem is a nurse who volunteers much of her time to teaching children and adults in our community. She is always ready to lend her time and energy to social causes. She helps to raise money to send children to summer camp every year. She organizes fund raisers for the Salam Arabic Lutheran Church, where her husband, the Reverend Khader El-Yateem, is pastor.

Grace volunteers her time to teach English and Arabic to children and seniors in conjunction with the Arabic Federation. She is active in the PTA, and also serves as a nurse at the Guild for Exceptional Children. Grace is warm, always welcoming others with a smile. She is the proud mother of Rowan, Janette, Naim and Isabelle.

Congratulations to the Golden family, as their love, support and community service values has led Michael to join the NYPD. Following his dad’s footsteps, Michael was pinned by his proud dad, State Senator Marty Golden. The Bay Ridge community is proud to see Michael Golden join the ranks of New York’s Finest.

Belated birthday greetings to my dear friend, Supreme Court Justice Arthur Schack. In addition to his busy schedule, Artie – a former chair of Community Board 10 — still finds the time to be of service with the Boy Scouts. We join his wife Dilia in wishing him many more happy and healthy ones.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES: Rosacea

For those who suffer from Rosacea, the following folk remedies have been used for decades. Nothing works for everyone, but the following home remedy is worth a try:

Wash face with a sulphur shampoo, followed by an anti-dandruff shampoo for itchy and flaky scalp. Leave each on face for no more than a minute and then rinse thoroughly.

Pat dry and use a 50/50 solution of apple cider vinegar and water on the red areas only. Any face cream as a moisturizer must be chemical free and fragrance free. As an internal aid, some people take two apple cider vinegar tablets per day.
