Unsung Bay Ridge: Behind-the-scenes booster

NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Our unsung heroes

This week’s unsung hero is someone who does a lot of good for our community behind the scenes. John Keegan, co-owner of the Greenhouse Café; located at 77th Street and Third Avenue, has been a leader in the Third Avenue merchants community for the past 30 years. He has supported numerous community projects from hosting the Merchants of Third Avenue meetings to events associated with the Bay Ridge St. Patricks Day Parade.

John has supported the Fort Hamilton military families during special celebrations for many years, especially during the Christmas holiday parties held at the base. He provides food to the local senior centers and hosts many community fundraisers free of charge with refreshments. His recognition is long overdue, and I am glad we have people like John within our community.

COMMUNITY NEWS

It’s that time of year again and the 20th Annual Halloween Walk, sponsored by State Senator Marty Golden, and attended by thousands of children and adults within our community and surrounding areas, is right around the corner. Chip Cafiero has indicated that this year the event will be even more exciting, as fun seekers will be climbing once more to the top of the mountain at Owls Head Park at 68th Street and Colonial Road to some new exhibits. Join us there on October 31 from 4 to 10 p.m.

Joining me on my October birthday, are two good friends, Don Clark and Justin Brannan. May they enjoy many more happy and healthy ones as they continue to serve our community.

UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES: Flu

This time of year, the flu seems to afflict young and old. A folk remedy is to purchase apple cider vinegar (the vinegar should be cloudy instead of clear). Most health food stores and some supermarkets carry this organic type. Two tablespoons of the vinegar combined with two tablespoons raw honey in half glass of water is a popular remedy. Sip intermittently at the first sign of cold or flu symptoms. If you can eat spicy foods, sprinkle cayenne pepper on foods and soup. It helps to clear congestion and speed healing.

Please consult your doctor if you have any health concerns, or are on any medication.
