Hoverboards now prohibited on city trains, buses

Board no more.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced on Wednesday, January 27 that the possession of hoverboards is now prohibited aboard New York City trains, buses and more – as well as at their respective stations – citing the toys’ lithium-ion batteries as posing a potential risk of fire.

“The safety of our customers and employees is always our top concern,” said MTA Chief Safety Officer David Mayer. “For obvious reasons, it is not safe to use hoverboards, skateboards or other personal wheeled vehicles on station platforms. We’re equally concerned about the safety risk of bringing devices that pose fire hazards into the confined spaces inside trains and buses.”

All in all, the boards will be banned from the New York City subway, New York City buses, the Long Island Rail Road, the Metro-North Railroad, the Staten Island Railway and Access-A-Ride. Hoverboards have already been banned by Amtrak, American regional railroads like Chicago’s Metra, and most United States airlines.
