68th Precinct Police Beat: Unknown burglar steals nearly $23,000 of diamond rings and cash from woman

Between Monday, March 28 and Saturday, April 2, the 68th Precinct received reports of four burglaries and one grand larceny. The 68th Precinct serves Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Fort Hamilton.

THIEVES OF QUEENS

Cops say that two crooks, described as males in their mid-20s from Queens, broke into a home near Colonial Road and 87th Street on Tuesday, March 29 at around 12:10 p.m. The home, owned by a 76-year-old man, was ransacked and the thieves stole $6,500 worth of jewelry, including a necklace worth $3,000. With the items in hand, the two perps got in the car and drove back to Queens, where cops stopped them and found the stolen property.

The two have been arrested.

POWER TOOL

An unknown burglar broke into a restaurant at 91st Street and Third Avenue on Monday, March 28 between 2:08 and 8:20 a.m. The perp used tools to break the lock on the business’s side door and cellar door. Once inside, the crook broke into the cash register and stole $5,000 that was inside of it.

$23,000 BURGLARY

A 57-year-old woman was the victim of a burglary that cost her approximately $23,130 of property, according to police. The victim said that on Tuesday, March 29, she left her home at 8 a.m. While she was gone, a burglar broke in through the back window, stole two diamond rings worth $15,000, and $8,000 cash before fleeing the scene. The woman returned at approximately 5:30 p.m. to find that the home had been ransacked and her property taken.

BAD APRIL FOOL’S JOKE

Sometime between Friday, April 1 at 6 a.m. and Saturday, April 2 at 4 p.m., a perp broke into the home of a 60-year-old Asian man who was out visiting family overnight. According to police, the crook removed the metal bars on the rear kitchen window, went inside, found several red envelopes that contained around $2,000, and stole the cash.

BAD FIRST IMPRESSION

A man said to be in his 20s stole $200 worth of goods from a 34-year-old Hispanic woman at a bar on 87th Street and Fifth Avenue on Saturday, April 2. At around 3:35 a.m., the woman walked away from her table for a few moments, leaving her Coach bag behind. When she returned, she discovered that the bag, worth $150 and containing a passport and credit cards, had been stolen.

Later, the victim watched surveillance footage and recognized the thief as someone she had spoken to at the bar that night.
