Coney memorializes victims of Orlando shooting with Parachute Jump lighting

In the wake of the nation’s worst terror attack since 9/11, Coney Island came together Monday evening, June 13 as the iconic Parachute Jump lit all the colors of the rainbow in memory of those who lost their lives over the weekend in the deadly Orlando shooting.

The shooting – which has been deemed the deadliest mass shooting in the history of the United States – occurred at a gay nightclub early Sunday, June 12, killing 49 people and injuring 53.

“I want to thank Luna Park for working with my office to light up the Parachute Jump tonight in memory of the lives that were tragically lost and impacted by the heinous terror attack in Orlando,” Councilmember Mark Treyger told this paper, “and also in memory of all the lives that are impacted locally, nationally and around the world by terror, hate, intolerance and just pure senseless violence.

“We, right now, need to come together as a community, as a city, and as a country – all peace-loving people – and really rally together, and strongly denounce hate; strongly denounce these barbaric acts of terror,” Treyger went on, stressing that he believes “love will always win.”
