Local pol announces free electronic waste removal for seniors

For some Brooklyn seniors trying to get rid of old electronic equipment, life might have just gotten easier.

Seniors and disabled residents living throughout parts of Coney Island, Gravesend, Bensonhurst and Brighton Beach could be eligible for free electronic waste removal courtesy of Councilmember Mark Treyger’s office.

Interested residents will be connected with staff members from Treyger’s office who will work alongside Wildcat Service Corporation, one of the organizations that the councilmember allocates funding to as part of the City Council’s Cleanup NYC initiative, to arrange a pickup of the items.

“I’m proud to offer this service to residents in my district,” said Treyger. “We all want to be mindful of the environment, and we all want to do our part to keep our planet clean, but it isn’t always easy to do so for our seniors or people with disabilities who may have difficulty moving large pieces of equipment or traveling to designated e-waste recycling locations.

“Now, getting rid of your old electronic equipment and helping the environment will be as easy as picking up the phone,” he continued. “Cleanup NYC is one of the most successful programs created by this City Council, and this is yet another great example why.”

Launched in 2015, the Cleanup NYC initiative allowed city councilmembers to distribute $103,921 worth of allocated funds to a city agency for direct services or to an approved nonprofit organization that provides either cleaning or street beautification services in Council districts, according to the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development.

“We are thrilled to be working with Councilmember Treyger and his constituents in District 47 in this innovative and forward thinking e-waste recycling program,” said David Saturn, director of social enterprise for Wildcat Services Corp. “Councilmember Treyger’s leadership in assisting seniors and people with disabilities to recycle computers and other electronics is both great for the community and great for the environment.”
