Stars & Stripes Democratic Club inducts new president

The Stars & Stripes Regular Democratic Club celebrated the induction of a new club president on Wednesday, June 22 at its annual dinner dance held at Sirico’s (8023 13th Avenue). Irene Chu, a Bensonhurst resident, activist and former journalist will take on the new role.

According to local pols and friends of Chu, the Community Board 11 member is “perfect” for the role.

“I am so pleased to congratulate Irene Chu for becoming our newest club president,” said Assemblymember Peter Abbate, “Her work ethic and community ties make her the perfect choice to represent the Stars & Stripes Club. As the 49th Assembly District changes, our club must continue to represent the community and celebrate its diversity.”

“The Stars & Stripes Club is thrilled to have Irene Chu as our next club president. She will uphold the tradition of being a strong advocate for the neighborhoods of Sunset Park, Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst and upholding the democratic values our club represents.” added District Leader Joseph Bova.

Heading up a new slate of officers – which include longtime club members Nicholas Zimmitti as vice president and Executive Secretary-Treasurer Kelly Steier – Chu, as president, will organize the political activities of the club. As a club member, she would often host events like GOTV and voter registration rallies.

“It’s truly my honor to be the next president to serve the Stars and Stripes Democratic Club,” Chu told this paper. “We all know that our community is changing and our club’s value is in reflecting the voice of the community. By serving as the president, I would like not just to encourage the Chinese community to be more politically involved but also to work for the diversity of our community.

“I have a close relationship with Assemblymember Peter Abbate, Councilmember Vincent Gentile, District Leader Joe Bova and District Leader candidate Victoria Kelly and thank them for their support,” she continued. “I have been involved in the community for many years and have the ability to work with different community organizations. I see myself as a connector between all the communities of the 49th Assembly District. By working with everyone here, with their trust, we believe this is what Stars and Stripes stands for. ”

“There is simply no better choice to lead the Stars & Stripes Club than Irene,” said Kelly, “I am excited to work with her.”

The Stars & Stripes Democratic Club is based in the 49th Assembly District, which is comprised of portions of Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights and Sunset Park.
