Warbasse Houses receive $2.4 million grant

The Amalgamated Warbasse Houses in Coney Island and West Brighton were awarded a $2.4 million Housing Preservation & Development (HPD) grant by the New York City Housing Preservation to help fund the cost of emergency repairs caused by Hurricane Sandy on Thursday, July 7.

The Warbasse Houses, a five-building unit located on Neptune Avenue, suffered severe flooding and electrical damage during the 2012 superstorm, which was not covered by insurance benefits.

“This grant means Warbasse can continue to be home to the residents who built it, and that those residents are safe in the face of future storms,” said Councilmember Mark Treyger, chair of the City Council’s Committee on Recovery and Resiliency.

The HPD Multifamily Storm Recovery Program, with the help of the Build it Back program, assists Sandy damaged properties with five or more apartments.  Treyger, alongside Housing Preservation Development Commissioner, Vicki Been worked with both programs to insure the recovery and repairs of the development.

“Thank you to Council Member Mark Treyger for his guidance, support, and help with our $2.4 million dollar reimbursement grant from the City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development,” said Michael J. Silverman, president of Amalgamated Warbasse Houses, Inc.

The development is home to low and moderate income families. It is the largest complex assisted by the City in Sandy’s aftermath. Since the storm, HPD has funded recovery for 111 buildings with nearly 16,000 households across storm impacted neighborhoods.

“We are pleased to help fund the recovery and future resiliency of Warbasse, a long-standing coastal community that weathered Sandy and came back as strong as ever,” said Been.
