Memorial outing in Dyker celebrates life of Ridgeite who perished on 9/11

The 15th Annual Joseph John Hasson III Memorial Golf Outing will take place on Friday, August 26 at the Dyker Beach Golf Course, memorializing the life of Bay Ridge-native Joseph John Hasson III, who perished in the September 11 attacks.

According to Joseph’s younger brother, Chris, the annual outing was begun by Joseph’s friends Mike and Susan Favale, and dedicated to Joseph’s son, Joseph Hasson IV .

“It is a great testament to my brother’s huge and wonderful personality,” said Chris. “The golf outing is a day of fun and laughter to celebrate my brother’s life, as well as the other people that were taken from us that day.”

Joseph was a Poly Prep graduate, having grown up on 82nd Street between Colonial Road and Narrows Avenue. He had been an employee of Cantor Fitzgerald, a financial services firm that lost more of its workforce on September 11 than any other World Trade Center tenant. He left behind a wife and a newborn son (Joseph Hasson IV).

On December 5, 2006, ex-mayor Michael R. Bloomberg signed into law a bill renaming 64 New York City streets in honor of those who perished on 9/11. Among the streets included in the legislation was the corner of 82nd Street and Colonial Road, which was renamed Joseph John Hasson III 9/11 Memorial Way.

Chris made it clear why the memorial has been so successful year after year.

“I would like to thank all the residents of Dyker Heights and Bay Ridge for always supporting us,” said Chris. “There is no better neighborhood where we would like to live and raise our families. Getting through tough times is not easy but having wonderful neighbors and friends make it much easier.”
