Fort Hamilton hosts send-off for military members deploying to Afghanistan

It was described by many as a bittersweet day.

During a ceremony that was held at Fort Hamilton Army Base, nearly 30 members of the 107th Military Police Company said their farewell to family and friends before being deployed to Afghanistan for a year to serve as a protection service detail.

The event, held at the Fort Hamilton Theater on Friday, September 30 was filled with emotional goodbyes as those who were headed overseas bonded with fellow soldiers and shared some precious time with their loved ones.

“This day means everything,” said Sergeant Sarah Boyle. “It makes the families more comfortable and understand what is going on. It’s nice to see them one more time. They can meet everyone. Last time I was away, they didn’t get to meet anyone in my company so it’s nice this time.”

“I’ve never been deployed before but we’ve been getting ready for it,” added Specialist Daniel Suarez, who was accompanied by his brother, friends and other family.  “It’s good to have my family’s support, but I’m going to miss them.”

For newlywed Sergeant Anne Raftopoulos, there are fears, but also excitement that awaits the heroic  journey. “The unknown is always a little bit scary, but I love the people I’m going with and I have a great support system at home. I’m sure it’ll work out fine,” she said, adding that missing her husband would be difficult. “We’ve slowly been preparing for this for a long time. It’s really hard because you want to be happy and excited but I’m also sad. It’s an emotional experience.”

It is also an emotional experience for the families. “It’s bittersweet,” said Kecia Boyd, Sarah’s mother. “We’re worried and concerned but know she’s in good hands and she’s been trained well. I’m so proud of her, more than words can say.”

Chris Ragozzino, Raftopoulos’ husband, was also proud but worried.  “It’s kind of scary. I’ve never been through anything like this I’ve never been with anybody who has been through this so everything is new,” he said. “I don’t know what to expect but were going to do it.”

During the ceremony, First Sergeant of the 107 Military Police Company Adam Meyer addressed the families. “I can speak of deployment because I’ve done so three times in my career and one of the hardest parts was leaving my family,” he said. “Thank you for being here and raising children with such fortitude and character. As hard as these upcoming months will be on you, take comfort in knowing that the training and leadership in this group has prepared them for the task at hand.”
