PHOTOS: Local precincts vie for title of ‘pinkest’ for Breast Cancer Awareness

Voting ends tomorrow for the title of “Pinkest Precinct” — and both the 62 and the 68 are vying for the crown.

To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, New York Police Department precincts across the city have gone pink to show their support. The department-wide effort took place from the first of the month through the 26th, during which times precincts like the 68th in Bay Ridge and the 62nd in Bensonhurst showed their true colors, draping their buildings, cop cars and even their members in pink. The month-long initiative comes to an end October 29, the last day of a three-day voting period that is open to the public to pick the “pinkest precinct.”

Some of the 68th Precinct’s efforts included a community bake sale, hosted outside the precinct (333 65th Street) on Wednesday, October 12, and a visit by 68th Precinct officers — alongside emergency service units — to the top of the Verrazano Bridge, hoisting a banner reminding drivers to get checked.

“Any tasks these officers are given, they go above and beyond,” 68th Precinct Captain Joseph Hayward told this paper. “The 68th Precinct wants everyone to go and get checked.”

Meanwhile, the 62nd Precinct, located at 1925 Bath Avenue, decked its halls from top to bottom in an effort to “go pink” and raise awareness for the disease.

“A big thank you to everybody involved for all the hard work,” 62nd Precinct officials tweeted, urging local residents to hit the web and vote.

At a Tuesday, October 18 62nd Precinct Community Council meeting, Captain Anthony Sanseverino urged residents to take notice not just of the precinct’s pink decor but also of the important meaning behind it.

According to the NYPD, “with over 2.8 million survivors in the United States, many members of the department have been touched directly, or indirectly, by the disease.”

The 68th Precinct serves Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Fort Hamilton, while the 62nd Precinct serves Bensonhurst, Bath Beach and Gravesend.
