Six-week-old baby dies after falling down elevator shaft in Coney building

A six-week-old baby girl has died, police officials have confirmed, after plummeting eight floors inside of an elevator shaft Thursday morning, October 13.

According to police, the newborn’s mother, a 21-year-old woman, called an elevator to the 23rd floor of 3415 Neptune Avenue at 10:32 a.m. and, when the doors opened, attempted to enter. However, NYPD officials told this paper that the elevator was out of service and when the doors opened, the elevator was positioned on the 15th floor, not the 23rd.

The baby — fastened in a stroller — fell the eight floors and landed on top of the resting elevator.

Emergency units responded and transported the newborn, identified as Areej Ali, to Coney Island Hospital in critical condition where she was pronounced dead.
