Fifth Avenue tree lighting draws large crowd in Park Slope

New York’s biggest borough is all about shopping small this holiday season.

To kick off the start of the season, the Park Slope Fifth Avenue Bid held its annual neighborhood tree lighting on Small Business Saturday, November 26.

Along with lighting the tree, at Fifth Avenue and Fourth Street, the evening featured a plethora of festive fun, including free hot cocoa and treats donated by the Chocolate Room, Du Jour Bakery, Bagel World and Buttermilk Bakeshop; Santa Claus and Frosty the Snowman spreading holiday cheer and candy canes; live music and carolers from Leah Shaw and Opera on Tap; and a puppet show from Puppetry Arts.

“It really went well. It was the biggest crowd we’ve ever had,” said BID Spokesperson Carol Klenfner. “It was far bigger than previous years and we’re following it up with visits from St. Nick and that’s going to be on the next three Saturdays [along with] Santa and Frosty riding up and down the avenue in vintage convertibles.

“It’s so Brooklyn –it’s not generic and it’s very small business,” she added.
