Work to begin at the Brooklyn Plaza of Hugh L. Carey Tunnel tonight

Work will begin at the Brooklyn plaza of the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel at 8 p.m. Thursday, January 5, through the month, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

During that time, crews will work to remove the now defunct toll booths and supporting structures, following the implementation of cashless tolling on Wednesday, January 4.

During this round-the-clock closure, demolition work will proceed in two stages, closing several toll lanes during each stage. Work will start on the far-right toll lanes facing the Manhattan-bound East tube, and proceed until all booths and islands have been cleared and the roadway resurfaced.

The expected completion for this work is before the end of January, 2017, weather permitting.

Motorists are advised to expect northbound delays and plan accordingly.

Motorists can sign up for MTA e-mail or text alerts at www.mta.info and check the Bridges and Tunnels homepage or Facebook page for the latest information.
