A comprehensive breast center at Staten Island University Hospital opened February 2, giving residents unprecedented access to important breast care.
The Florina Rusi Marke Comprehensive Breast Care Center, 4656B Mason Avenue at SIUH’s North Campus, addresses patient needs from cancer assessment to medical treatment. One of the main goals of the center to detect signs of breast diseases earlier.
Led by Dr. Cynara Coomer, the facility’s team includes surgeons and oncologists as well as social workers and genetic counselors. Services include weekly case management, advanced imaging, oncology and innovative techniques in surgery and reconstruction.
Among the features of the center are an array of holistic programs including yoga, meditation, massage therapy, reiki and more, as well as the Personal Touch Boutique, where women who have had mastectomies can be fitted for mastectomy bras and swimsuits after surgery. The boutique is run by consultants certified in mastectomy care, and also offers wigs for those patients who want them.
Rusi Marke died of breast cancer at the age of 34 in 2003. In her memory, the Florina Rusi Marke Foundation was formed, initially opening a breast clinic in her family’s home country of Macedonia, and in 2013 pledging $1 million to SIUH for the new breast center.
Born in South Africa, Coomer also works in the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and developed her clinical practice at Lenox Hill Hospital. In addition, she is a medical contributor with Fox News.
