With the promise of spring right around the corner, the 11th anniversary of Fashion Week Brooklyn kicked off on Saturday, March 25 at Kings Plaza with floral elements and camouflage prints.
Both jumpsuits and the bohemian look are making a comeback, according to Dawn Simon, area senior manager, marketing for mall owner Macerich, who oversees Kings Plaza. Most popular for adults are bralettes and cropped tank tops with sportswear, paired with heels for a dramatic effect. Button downs are also being paired with shorter crop tops this season, and children’s wear continues to be dominated by fuller skirts for girls.
According to producer and director of the event Rick Davy, prints and bold colors have also made a general comeback, with stark contrasts being the upcoming go-to for designers.
To put the event together, Simon held four casting calls for models, designers, and artists alike to be a part of the event. After auditions which began in February, 200 models made the cut to participate. Simon said the “opportunity to see models, both professional and non-professional,” was the most rewarding part of the event for her.
Among the featured brands were Fashion To Figure, Karma, Clique, Aerie, Forever 21, Charlotte Russe, New York and Company, Macy’s, Portabella, Vans, American Eagle, Old Navy and The Children’s Place. Accessories were provided by Aldo, and contributions also came from Call it Spring and Journeys.
Kings Plaza is located at Avenue U and Flatbush Avenue.
