The Historic Districts Council (HDC) is urging Brooklyn to band together and help #SaveGowanus.
In conjunction with public participation workshops currently being hosted by the New York City Department of City Planning called the Gowanus Neighborhood Planning Study, the HDC has launched an Instagram campaign “honoring Gowanus’ built environment.”
“HDC and local community groups are participants in this study to ensure that this community’s historic resources and character are spoken for,” wrote the HDC in an e-mail blast promoting both the study and the campaign. “While we have our favorite Gowanus buildings, we want to hear from you!”
The council is urging Brooklynites to “snap” their beloved Gowanus — “whether it be a modest rowhouse, an old factory, or the BRT Powerhouse” — and upload it to Instagram accompanied by its street address and the hashtag “#SAVEGOWANUS.”
Participants are also encouraged to tag both HDC (@hdcnyc) and Councilmember Brad Lander (@brad.lander) in their posts so both are made aware of residents’ “preservation-worthy” buildings. Participants will also be featured and photo credited on HDC’s Instagram.
