“Better than ever” sanitation services coming to southwest Brooklyn thanks to Council funding, says local pol

As hefty trash issues plague southwest Brooklyn from Bay Ridge to Bensonhurst and beyond, one local politician has announced an $180,000 allocation in the New York City Council’s NYC Cleanup Initiative that will go directly to the Department of Sanitation (DSNY).

Councilmember Vincent Gentile on Thursday, July 20 touted “better than ever” sanitation services for Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst, via a total of $200,000 in funding from the Council.

DSNY’s allocation, the pol said, will directly fund trash pickups at the most highly trafficked intersections for pedestrians a total of six days per week – up one day from the city’s current five-day-a-week pickup schedule – as well as a mechanical broom that will be used weekly to clean streets throughout the district.

The remaining $20,000 will be allocated to the Wildcat Service Corporation, which sweeps, cleans sewer gates, eliminates graffiti and shovels snow for the elderly and disabled year-round.

“For a number of years, I have been committed to providing a great service to Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst in the form of funding for Sanitation services,” said Gentile, “and getting the best ‘bang for our buck’ as hardworking taxpayers to keep our neighborhoods clean, safe, and healthy.”

Additionally, Gentile said, the Council’s latest budget includes a $120,000 capital allocation for DSNY for two skid steer trucks – plow trucks used to clear snow from crosswalks and bus stops – as well as a $165,000 capital allocation for a haulster truck to salt, plow, and clear snow and ice from tertiary streets.

These two allocations, the local pol stressed, are in addition to the previously mentioned $200,000 Council commitment.
