Sections of Bath Beach, Bensonhurst and Coney Island will be sprayed with pesticide on Thursday, August 3 and Friday, August 4 to prevent West Nile virus, according to the Health Department.
The Health Department will spray low concentrations of Anvil 10+10 from trucks within an area bordered by 25th Avenue, 84th Street and 20th Avenue to the West, 65th Street, Avenue P, Ocean Parkway, Avenue U, Haring Street, Avenue R, Schenectady Avenue, Avenue L and Paerdegat Basin to the North and Belt Parkway to the East; and Belt Parkway, Coyle Street, Avenue Z, Stillwell Avenue and Coney Island Creek to the South. Spraying will begin on August 3 at around 9 p.m. and continue until 6 a.m. the following morning, weather permitting.
Although the pesticide poses no threat to humans, the Health Department recommends the following to those living within the boundaries.
- Whenever possible, stay indoors during spraying. People with asthma or other respiratory conditions are encouraged to stay inside since direct exposure could worsen these conditions.
- Air conditioners may remain on. However, if you wish to reduce the possibility of indoor exposure to pesticides, set the air conditioner vent to the closed position, or choose the re-circulate function.
- Remove children’s toys, outdoor equipment and clothes from outdoor areas during spraying. If outdoor equipment and toys are exposed to pesticides, wash them with soap and water before using again.
- Wash skin and clothing exposed to pesticides with soap and water. Always wash your produce thoroughly with water before cooking or eating.
