PHOTOS: Coney Island Music Festival makes its debut

Over 8,000 attendees made their way to the Coney Island Music Festival throughout the course of a weirdly weathered Saturday afternoon, August 12.

The latest addition to the summer series of events held by the Alliance for Coney Island, the event, a first for the beachfront nabe, is right in keeping with the image of “The People’s Playground,” according to Alliance spokesperson Cindy Godla.

To ensure the success of the festival, Godla said, making sure she had something for every age group was key. Next year, she’s hoping for better weather, because “planning any outdoor event is always tricky and stressful and the weather hasn’t always been on our side.”

“We have such an amazingly unique location with such a diverse audience — how could you not want to have one here?” she stressed.

“Music really is a universal language,” said Godla. “It doesn’t matter who you are, what you do, where you live, how much you make — music really brings people together.”

Performers included Hawthorne Heights, Alexander Jean and the Just Us band, among others, and kids’ entertainment featured large Jenga pieces. Kids also had the opportunity to climb a rock wall, which was popular despite the intermittent clouds.
