Pols, locals call for Coney Island and Canarsie stops on NYC Ferry

A bevy of politicians convened on the steps of City Hall on Tuesday, August 8 to call on the city to include neighborhoods like Coney Island and Canarsie in the new NYC Ferry system.

“Our neighborhood needs more public transportation options, particularly as our city experiences a transportation crisis fueled by delays, malfunctions, and service disruptions,” wrote Councilmember Mark Treyger on Facebook prior to the rally. “The ferry service is expanding to more and more neighborhoods, and I know many in our community believe that Coney Island should be next.”

Treyger was joined at the event by fellow Councilmember Alan Maisel, Congressmember Hakeem Jeffries, State Senators Diane Savino and Roxanne Persaud, and Assemblymember Pam Harris as well as a slew of other advocates from organizations like the Waterfront Alliance, the Alliance for Coney Island, the Canarsie Improvement Association and Coney Islanders 4 Ferry.

The NYC Ferry system – which just this summer rolled out the East River, Rockaway and South Brooklyn routes – will launch its Astoria route at the end of this month with its Lower East Side and Soundview routes slated to set sail sometime next summer.

The system has already celebrated one million riders and, according to officials, is making moves towards bigger boats.
