Heavy rainfall and downed wires left more than 700 Dyker Heights residents without power early Tuesday, August 15 and even left two hospitalized.
According to reports, a mother and her 18-year-old daughter living near 83rd Street and 11th Avenue were rushed to the hospital just before 4:30 a.m. after suffering intense electrical shocks while investigating a flaming tree outside of their home.
The pair was first awoken by the sound of several loud explosions. Those explosions, reports claim, were Con Edison’s power lines – which run through the branches of the tree – snapping, which eventually scorched the family’s tree.
According to Con Edison, 27,000 volts of power run through the wires that were down.
By 8 a.m. Tuesday morning, nearly half of the agency’s customers without power were still in the dark. Power, however, returned to the majority of residents by mid-afternoon Tuesday.
