Emergency Management Department warns city to prepare for frigid temperatures

Brooklynites might want to bundle up extra warm throughout the next week or so, as temperatures are predicted to drop into the single digits and teens.

The New York City Emergency Management Department (NYCEMD) warned New Yorkers to prepare for the arctic blast beginning on Tuesday, December 26, with an average daily temperature of 19 degrees expected until Tuesday, January 2.

“With an arctic chill in our area through New Year’s weekend, make sure you bundle up outside and wear a hat, scarf and gloves,” said NYCEMD Commissioner Joseph Esposito. “Stay indoors as such as possible, and help others to stay safe by checking on elderly family members, neighbors, and people with increased health risks.”

According to the NYCEMD, daytime temperatures will climb into the teens and mid-20s, while lows will fall into the single digits and teens. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Special Weather Statement on Wednesday, December 27, stating that “As Arctic high pressure moves into the region, gusty northwest winds combined with very cold temperatures will result in wind chill values between 0 and -5 after midnight tonight into Thursday morning.”

Brooklynites can also expect single-digit wind chills overnight throughout New Year’s weekend as well. The NWS predicts that the overnight low on New Year’s Eve may dip to just 12 degrees.
