A Look Back: Crowning Miss Norway

Politics and culture intersected in Bay Ridge, in May, 1964, when then-Senator Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota visited the neighborhood to mark the 150th anniversary of Norwegian Constitution Day.

Humphrey, whose mother was Norwegian, is seen in this photo from the files of this newspaper with that year’s Miss Norway of Greater New York, Beverly Hope Heiberg. Also shown are Marit Birkland and neighborhood icon Luigi Marano, then a member of the Assembly. A Democrat, Humphrey would later serve as vice president under President Lyndon Johnson, and run unsuccessfully for president in 1968, losing to Republican Richard Nixon.
