Brighton Beach end of Boardwalk gets two new comfort stations after years of delays

The Brighton Beach end of the borough’s famous Boardwalk celebrated the opening of two brand new comfort stations at the end of Coney Island Avenue over Memorial Day Weekend, just in time for the new beach season, after years of construction delays and community concern.

“New comfort stations are important to everyone who uses our iconic Boardwalk and beach, and they help ensure a positive experience for all who visit our community,” said Assemblymember Steven Cymbrowitz, who in 2008 received $10 million in funds to help rehab the historic Riegelmann Boardwalk which connects Brighton to Coney, and who in 2013 led community-wide opposition to the original placement of these new modular comfort stations.

The $2 million, “modular” elevated bathrooms were a long time coming, originally to be placed by the New York City Parks Department at the end of Brighton 15^th Street in front of the community’s Oceana condo complex. However, Cymbrowitz and others contended at several hearings that the state-of-the-art facilities would better serve the public farther west.

“I’d like to thank Mayor [Bill] de Blasio and Brooklyn Parks Commissioner Marty Maher for listening to the community and honoring the wishes of the vast majority of residents who wanted the comfort stations installed at Coney Island Avenue,” the pol said. “We said they’d be open by Memorial Day weekend, and here they are.”
