NewYork-Presbyterian opens cancer center in Park Slope

A new cancer treatment center that offers patients access to top medical experts recently marked its grand opening in Park Slope.

Representatives from NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Group Brooklyn held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 25 to mark the opening of the new cancer center at 340 Fourth Avenue.

A team of 13 cancer specialists and oncologists that includes medical experts from Weill Cornell Medical Center is already providing diagnosis and life-saving treatment for cancer patients as well as patients with liver and lung diseases, officials said.

The center has been up and running since January.

The facility is located less than half a mile away from NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital at 506 Sixth Street and surgeries will be performed at the hospital.

Formerly known as New York Methodist Hospital, the hospital became part of the NewYork-Presbyterian Regional Hospital network in 2017 and its name was changed to NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital.

If a patient needs more advanced care, the patient will have access to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan.

Part of the goal of opening the new center in Park Slope is to ease the stress on cancer patients by providing medical care right in their own backyard, according to David Alge, senior vice president of community and population health at NewYork-Presbyterian.

“At NewYork-Presbyterian, we are very sensitive to how difficult a cancer diagnosis and treatment can be for individuals and their families. This is why we designed this location to bring together highly-trained specialists and compassionate staff in a healing environment. If we can make treatment just a little easier on our patients, we will,” Alge said.

“Everything here revolves around the patient,” said Dr. Steven Silber, chief medical officer and chief quality officer of New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. “It is a spectacular location where we bring together our most skilled and talented oncologists and surgeons, including Weill Cornell Medicine experts, so that we can provide the best cancer and disease care to people right here in Brooklyn.”

Silber and Dr. David Nanus, chief of hematology and medical oncology at Weill Cornell Medicine, were among the officials who spoke at the ribbon cutting ceremony on May 25.

The new center has 14 exam rooms.

NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Group Brooklyn is a partnership between doctors from various neighborhoods in New York City and NewYork-Presbyterian, one of the country’s largest academic medical centers with more than 2,000 beds.

Weill Cornell Medicine, with which NewYork-Presbyterian is affiliated, is a treatment and research program located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Its parent university is Cornell University and it sponsors educational programs for doctors in the U.S. and in countries like Austria, Turkey, Brazil, Haiti, Qatar and Tanzania.
