Knights honor grand marshal at pre-parade Mass

Deacon John Heyer, the pastor associate at Sacred Heart and St. Stephen Church,125 Summit St., Brooklyn, the owner of the Scotto Funeral Home and development officer for Futures in Education, was the grand marshal for the June 28 Brooklyn American Independence Day Parade. 

The pre-parade 11 a.m. Mass was held at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 245 Prospect Park West in Park Slope, where Pastor Rev. Lawrence D. Ryan conducted the service.

Immediately following the mass, Deacon Heyer and fellow honoree Charles Salvatore Dono, a civic activist, Dept. of Sanitation worker and membership chairman of the Brooklyn District of the Greater NYC Boy Scouts of America, were presented with plaques and parade sashes by Long Island Assembly Faithful Navigator Eddie Velinski and parade chairman Ed Clancy. Dono’s honorarium was as a recipient of the Father John F. Brogan Community Service Award in recognition of his outstanding service to the church and community.

Long-time member of the Fort Hamilton Citizens Action Committee George Prezioso was unanimously elected as the committee’s new president on June 26. He is a well-known civic leader, trustee at the Bay Ridge Historical Society and financial  planning executive.

When Bill Guarinello resigned this post, to which he had been repeatedly re-elected for approximately 22 years, Vice President Marty Golden was named the interim acting president. Other board officers include Vice President John Farrell, Treasurer Craig Eaton and Secretary Brian Dolan. 

Other Fort Hamilton news: Trevor Loew, who has been serving as director of the Army Garrison’s MWR services unit for many years, has been promoted to the base’s new deputy garrison commander. We had a chance to personally congratulate him at a recent meeting at the garrison’s headquarters.
