Bay Ridge’s Shore Road Delicatessen to close this Friday

Shore Road Delicatessen is closing up shop for good, according to a sign hanging in its Third Avenue window.

The beloved Bay Ridge eatery, which has been serving up hot food and fully loaded sandwiches to loyal patrons for years at 9316 Third Avenue, will serve its last meals on Friday, January 27 and shut its lights at 7.p.m.

“We would like to thank you for all your patronage and continued support,” wrote Shore Road Deli’s owners Dennis and Lisa by hand on a neon green sign attached to the window and addressed to the shop’s “loyal customers.” “At this time, however, we must say goodbye.”

The deli leaves behind a legacy of particularly meaningful specialty sandwiches — like the “Narrows,” the “Ovington,” the “Marine” and the “Ft. Hamilton”– almost all of which were named after areas of its hometown.

“It has been our pleasure serving and meeting each and every one of you,” the owners continued, stressing that they are currently in the market for a smaller space that would still accommodate Shore Road Deli’s favorite hot foods.

Merchants of Third Avenue President Bob Howe told this paper that he’s sad to see yet another smaller shop go.

“I thought the food was great, you know,” said Howe, “and we’re disappointed that the community didn’t support them enough to keep the place up and running. They were active in the [merchants] association, they were active in the festivals. They were always active.”

He went on to chalk up the community’s latest loss to a change in the way consumers shop nowadays.

“We’ve seen a lot of bakeries and a lot of these small delis sort of go away,” he said. “I think that, instead, a lot of shoppers are opting for supermarket-style, one-stop shops. I know there’s still a lot of people in Bay Ridge who go to one place for their bread, one place for their cheese and another for their cold cuts, but obviously not enough to keep these small delicatessens running.

“Shore Road Deli will be missed,” he concluded.
