A New Utrecht high School student was arrested for bringing a gun into the shool.

Police arrested a 17-year-old male New Utrecht High School student for bringing a gun onto school grounds on Thursday, May 25.

Authorities say that at around 12:17 p.m., officers arrived at the school, 1601 80th Street, and found the student, identified as Daniel Barrow, carrying a loaded .380 caliber firearm.

Reports claim he surrendered the weapon to school officials.

“Safety always comes first, and this item was swiftly and safely recovered by the NYPD,” the Department of Education said in a statement.  “We are looking into this deeply troubling incident and are providing the school community with additional support.”

Barrow has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon.

There are no metal detectors at New Utrecht High School.
