When parents envision their child’s ideal exercise regimen, itusually doesn’t include a motor vehicle. However, they probablyhaven’t heard of the New York City Department of Parks &Recreation’s mobile recreation vehicles, which house exercise gear,athletic equipment and even interactive video games in convertedvans.
On Tuesday, July 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., all three types ofmobiles that the Parks Department operates – play, skate andfitness — will be on hand for the first-ever Play Brooklyn eventin Owl’s Head Park, organized by Brooklyn Mobile Unit CoordinatorLynn McEvoy.It’s going to be self-contained between the basketball courts, theskate park and the sprinklers, McEvoy said about the event. Thenif [children] want, they can go to the playground and play. It’sgoing to be a great day.The mobiles each feature tools for different types of activities.In addition to athletic equipment for sports like basketball andsoccer, the play mobile features the supplies for relay races,tug-o-war and potato sack races, competitions that will be offeredat the July 26 event.The skate mobile features helmets, knee pads and skates and evenprovides instruction for new skaters. The fitness mobile boasts two32-inch flat screen televisions equipped with aerobic interactivegames like the Wii Fit game, Dance Dance Revolution.All of which should add up to a diverse day of physical fitnesssure to please even the most persnickety families, McEvoysaid.Everything is interactive for the young, the old, the in between,she explained.
