Thirty-eight singers took the stage at Xaverian High School,last Saturday, to audition for Bay Ridge’s annual blockbuster, theSenior Idol competition.
Sponsored by AARP Chapter 5055, the event has grown from achapter fundraiser to a huge community event, said organizer GailAsfazadour, who praised the performers as amazing. It was waybigger, way better. The quality of the talent was superior.
With singers who ranged in age from 53 to 78, the songs alsorepresented a vast array of musical styles, said Asfazadour, fromfolk to rock and roll to My Fair Lady.’
Fourteen finalists – including four repeat finalists from lastyear’s competition – will vie on Saturday, October 1 at 8 p.m. atXaverian, 7100 Shore Road, for the title of Senior Idol.
They are Edie Gentile, Julia Dioria, Nester Castro, HectorGonzalez, Jim Shanahan, John Lambert, Beverly Bennick, Andrew Chin,Audrey Melikian, Anthony D’Agosta, Richard Low, Sherry Kayser,Michael Phalen and Stephanie Spathakis.
Doors open at 7:30. Tickets are $15 per person at the door, andinclude five raffle tickets.
