PYO football: Vikings edge out Steelers

In front of a standing-room-only crowd that spilled onto both65th and 66th Streets, the Peewee division opened up the 2011football season at the Parkville Youth Organization as the Vikingsjust got by the Steelers, 7-6.

As this year’s PeeWee division has many first-year players, thefirst half of play was dominated by the defense as AntonioPerfetto, Jack Ryan and Jonathan Mendizabel led the Vikings defensewhile Matthew Rossetti, Manny Aviles and Thomas Wright anchored theSteelers.

But late in the first half, the Steelers’ Christopher Zullobroke free of a tackle and took off on a 32-yard jaunt down theleft side line and went untouched the rest of the way for thetouchdown. The point after was no good, and the Steelers protectedthat lead into half time.

The defense was sharp through most of the second half as well, but with 10:42 left in the game, Jack Ryan showed off his offensiveskill as he powered his way into the end zone from the enemy nineyards line to tie the score at 6.

Antonio Perfetto joined the offense as he banged in the extrapoint to put the Vikes up 7 to 6. The teams exchanged possessionsbefore the men of Steel got the ball back late in the game.

As they tried to race the clock down field, Robert McCool brokefree and scored what seemed to be the winning TD but the play hadbeen whistled dead as the Steelers were guilty of a false start. With all their time outs gone, the Steelers were unable to advancethe ball any further and the Vikings held on to the narrow 7-6victory.
