Learning for lawyers

At the Bay Ridge Lawyer’s monthly meeting , held at J.T.’s Restaurant on Third Avenue, lawyers received information on filing cases online.

New legislation enacted this year makes it mandatory for lawyers to file certain cases electronically, so the Honorable Nancy T. Sunshine, the Kings County clerk and commissioner of jurors, stopped by to show them the ins and outs of E-filing.

Jerry Carucci, the statewide coordinator for e-filing, also explained the changes to the system and went through which cases would need to be filed online.

The New York State Courts Electronic Filing (NYSCEF) system was implemented to make filing easier and court documents more accessible. A lawyer can now file cases 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with no additional cost. The consultant or consultants that entered the document will receive email notifications when the court has made a decision on the case or if other documents are introduced into the case.

Accessible from anywhere, NYSEF allows legal firms to print the pages of their documents and not be limited to going to the clerk’s office to viewing the files.
