New attending cardiac surgeon at Maimonides

Dr. Paul C. Saunders was recently appointed as attending cardiac surgeon in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Maimonides Medical Center. He has expertise in coronary artery bypass and minimally invasive valve surgeries. He also specializes in aortic surgery, using both conventional open techniques as well as newer endovascular approaches.

“Dr. Saunders brings cutting edge surgical treatment of heart failure to patients at Maimonides,” said Dr. Greg Ribakove, chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery. “His experience with innovative therapies such as ventricular assist devices makes him an invaluable asset to our team.”

Saunders performs a number of treatments and procedures such as: coronary artery bypass, valve replacement and valve repair, ventricular assist device implants, thoracic endovascular aortic aneurism repair, extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and minimally invasive cardiac surgery.

“I look forward to joining the legendary team of cardiac experts already in place at Maimonides,” said Saunders. “We hope to bring the most effective heart therapies to all of Brooklyn’s communities.”

Saunders treats a wide variety of conditions including: thoracic aortic disease, ischemic heart disease, valvular heart disease, and heart failure / cardiogenic shock. He earned his medical degree at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and completed his training in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at NYU, as well as his research fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery.

Saunders is board certified in both general and thoracic surgery and is an assistant professor of surgery at New York Medical College. His interests include all aspects of adult heart surgery, with special emphasis on mitral valve repair and minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Saunders has published extensively, with over 20 publications relating to cardiac surgery, as well as numerous book chapters. Saunders has also spoken at national surgical meetings and given many invited lectures in the field.

Today, the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, under the direction of Ribakove, offers a comprehensive range of cardiac procedures unmatched in Brooklyn and equaled by only a few centers in the New York metropolitan area. The Maimonides cardiac team treats a broad range of diseases of the heart and chest, and specializes in innovative approaches to coronary artery bypass, atrial fibrillation, thoracic aneurysm, and valve disease.
