The other sinkholes

A total of 28 different sinkhole locations have been reported to Community Board 10 since June 28, when the sinkhole opened on 92nd Street and Third Avenue.

Every location reported to CB 10 has been examined by city Department of Transportation personnel, said Josephine Beckmann, the board’s district manager, who noted that those where an underlying water problem is suspected are being referred to the Department of Environmental Protection for review, and possible video examination of the inside of the sewer lines running underneath the street.

The reality, Beckmann said, is that most of the neighborhood’s infrastructure dates back to the period between 1900 and 1930, so that age is an issue.

“I’m happy that residents are calling in and paying closer attention so if there is an underlying water issue, it can be addressed,” Beckmann added.
