The Cobble Hill Health Center held its annual Adopt-A-Grandparent Carnival to encourage neighbors and elderly residents to interact, hopefully on a regular basis. Between playing in the bouncy house, snacking on ice cream, and watching a magic show, families and individuals signed up to “adopt” residents by volunteering to talk, hang out, read a book or newspaper, and even mark a birthday with them.
“When our residents come here, we take care of their mind, body, and spirit, not just their physical body,” said director Louise Dueno. “With this program, we want to focus on residents who have no family. Some will visit them, develop a relationship with them, and it’s always a good thing… When one person comes to visit YOU, it makes them feel special.”
