Sunset Park welcomes its first music-inspired hotel

On September 27, 29-year-old DJ Bijal proudly presented to Brooklyn his highly anticipated music-driven hotel–Hotel BPM–at its official ribbon cutting ceremony in Sunset Park.

The hotel — whose name is short for beats per minute — gives a “relaxed approach to luxury,” as Bijal described it, allowing people to “be comfortable being who they are.” He will let his staff show off their tattoos and wear jeans while they work at the hostelry, located at 139 33rd Street.

The hotel’s laid-back atmosphere was inspired by an “easy going” guy, as Bijal considers himself. Born in India, he went to Long Island University, at the Brooklyn campus. At the age of 16, Bijal got into deejaying.

“Brooklyn is where my career birthed,” he said, and having traveled all around the world, “Mr. Everywhere,” as he’s also known because of his ‘Everywhere radio,’ station, Bijal decided to kick off his idea in the same city where he studied business management and marketing.

“Of all my years in New York City,” noted Paul Ruffino, the hotel’s managing director, “I’ve never been so enthused.

“Brooklyn is the most incredible city in the world. There’s no other place like it. It’s a big statement,” added Ruffino – who’s been in business for three decades and has lived in 16 foreign countries.

The property offers 76 guest rooms, environmentally-conscious amenities, luxury service, and a soundtrack streaming throughout its public areas “combining music and hospitality in the heart of Brooklyn.” Rates for a king or two Euro queen room begin at $209 per night.

“Hotel BPM is about redefining the travel experience to a new generation of travelers,” read a statement on its newly created Facebook page. “This lifestyle brand focused around music entertainment culture offers its chic, urban clientele a hip modern feel.”

Bijal and his wife, Reshma, currently reside in their hotel. They have been married for a little over a year, and she says seeing her husband’s passion become a reality has been wonderful. Reshma comes from Michigan, the couple met while she was visiting friends in New York City, and she loves Brooklyn’s diversity. “Everyone really gets along,” she remarked.

“Everywhere you go, there’s really good food,” she added, noting that she loves the fact that every time they go out to eat, she is also submerging into the cultural aspect of the restaurant.

Borough President Marty Markowitz, referred to Brooklyn as “the epicenter” of the world, which attracts unique visitors from all over. “You’re a few steps from the greatest restaurants,” he stated, so, “If music is your gem, then BPM can’t be beat,” he concluded.
