McKinley Park shines bright

The air was filled with holiday spirit on Wednesday, December 12 when the neighborhood tree was lit in McKinley Park, courtesy of State Senator Marty Golden, who hosts the event annually.

About 100 residents attended the event, where the Guild for Exceptional Children chorus sang a variety of Christmas carols, led by Executive Director Paul Cassone.

“They got the crowd in spirit as we waited for Santa to arrive,” said John Quaglione, Golden’s deputy chief of staff. “When he showed up, he gave out candy canes and hot chocolate.”

Santa, Golden and guest of honor Fran Vella-Marrone, president of the Dyker Heights Civic Association, which helps organize the event every year, flipped the switch to light the beautiful tree.

Afterwards, the GEC continued to sing carols and Santa took pictures with Dyker Heights’ littlest residents.

“It was a well-attended event,” Quaglione said. “Many did bring donations for Toys for Tots. A good number of toys will be sent out [to those in need].”
