It should be sunny today in Brooklyn, with temperatures reaching a high of 46 degrees today, according to Weather.com, which also reports a 10 percent chance of rain and wind coming WNW at between 10 and 20 mph. The evening will see the temperatures drop to 36 percent.

  • President Obama appointed a woman to lead the Secret Service. Veteran agent Julia Pierson is the first woman to serve as director of the security agency. The move comes a year after the sunglasses-and-suits agency had to deal with an embarrassing prostitution scandal among its male-dominated ranks. [Reuters]
  • Two state lawmakers introduced a bill to legalize medical marijuana in New York. [NYDN]
  • New York’s 2013-2014 budget clocks in at $143 billion and will be voted on next week. It includes $27 million for the creation of a state database of pistol permits that can be cross-referenced with federal databases of criminal convictions. [NYDN]
  • It’s the refund check request from hell: the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services wants New York State to return $27.5 million in Medicaid reimbursements for youth rehabilitation services that is says ““did not fully comply with state regulations.” [NYT]
  • SUNY Downstate has insisted that their desire to close Long Island College Hospital (LICH) is not fueled by the lucrative bidding wars that would result for the prime  real estate in historic Cobble Hill and Brooklyn Heights. But developers are still making plans. [NYDN]
