Let there be books!
The grand reopening of the Red Hook Public Library is tomorrow, Tuesday, April 2 at 1 p.m. — you may want to show up early at around 12:30 p.m. — and the festivities are gearing up to be an exciting one, with families and community leaders gathering at 7 Wolcott Place to reclaim another neighborhood hallmark from the floodwaters of Hurricane Sandy.
At 1 p.m., the doors will reopen after over four months of being out of commission as a library, although it served as a warming center and relief hub for the thousands of local residents affected by Hurricane Sandy.
A Bookmobile van has been used as a temporary library resource for months, parking outside the library most days and offering limited books and activities for children.
The 7,500 square-foot, one-story brick library has sat at its current location for over 35 years, after a fire in 1945 destroyed the previous building on Visitation Place — a Carnegie library built in the Mediterranean Revival style.
