Go slow on Ridge

Have you noticed the newly installed signs along Ridge Boulevard?

Just days after its advent was announced by Councilmember Vincent Gentile, the “School Slow Zone” is officially in effect. New signs from 84th Street to 92nd have been put up, alerting drivers to reduce speed to 20 MPH. As part of the speed zone, those ticketed for speeding along the strip will be charged at a higher than normal rate.

The eight-block corridor is the site of four schools: Visitation Academy, P.S. 185, Adelphi Academy and DGK School. It was selected as part of a community-based program to change driver behavior.

The much-needed traffic-calming plan— previously approved by the Department of Transportation (DOT) — will also implement flashing beacons from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. during peak drop-off hours and again from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. during school pick-up times.

“As your councilman, my number one concern will always be for public safety and I continue to work closely with the Department of Transportation towards making our streets a safe place,” Gentile said.
