ConEd equipment repairs may cause power problems

Lay off the juice a bit, requests Con Edison.

The request comes as the power giant is asking thousands of Brooklyn residents to avoid using high-energy appliances for tonight and at least the next couple of days as they make equipment repairs. Examples of such appliances include washers, dryers, and air conditioners; lights and TV sets should also be shut off.

“It will be worked on until the problems are repaired,” explained Joyce Faber, spokesperson for ConEd. “There is no specific time yet, but we will notify residents when they no longer need to conserve.”

According to Faber, as of 6 p.m., “only 22 customers were out of service.”

The neighborhoods affected are Flatbush, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Prospect Heights, Canarsie, Flatlands, Mill Basin, Old Mill Basin, Bergen Beach and Georgetown.

Con Ed has reduced voltage by 8 percent in the area to protect equipment until company crews complete equipment repairs.

In addition, Con Ed has reduced voltage in these neighborhoods: Coney Island, Seagate, Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach and Sheepshead Bay. However, the company has not asked customers in these areas to conserve.

Customers can report outages and check service restoration status by at www.conEd.com or by calling 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633).  When reporting an outage, customers should have their Con Edison account number available, if possible, and report whether their neighbors also have lost power.

Customers who report outages will be called by Con Edison with their estimated restoration times as they become available.
