East New York summer camp showcases young talent

Campers at SCO’s Family Dynamics Summer Enrichment Program showcased their talent in “My Neighborhood,” camp celebration on Friday, August 2.

“This program gives kids a creative voice through the art, within the context of a challenged community,” explained Family Dynamics Director Rick Gallwey.

This was a four week summer camp open to all children from grades K-12. The celebration hosted at I.S. 262, 301 Vermont Street was an all day event for the children to share not only their creativity but their feelings about their home, East New York. Some recited poetry while others got up on stage to share interpretative dances. The event ended off with a documentary film that the campers made themselves.

Askari Longdon, age 12, recites “We Fight for What?” - a poem he wrote about the violence in his neighborhood - as other students perform an interpretive dance about the origins of hip-hop culture.

“It provides them with a safe place where they are part of group all learning about self-expression, leadership and community,” said Gallwey.
