Push for new law to control “massage parlors”

Two local legislators, State Senator Marty Golden and Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis, have developed new legislation aimed to expedite the closure of unlicensed day spas in the neighborhood.

The lawmakers announced the bill at a press conference held in front of the currently shut down Shirley Day Spa, located at 78th Street and Fifth Avenue. Shirley Day Spa was one of 12 such facilities closed in a sting last month, that also resulted in the arrest of 19 people alleged to have been involved with prostitution through the now-shuttered

The new legislation’s aim is to crack down on prostitution and human trafficking alleged to occur in the premises, by more closely controlling aspects such as operating hours and licensing requirements.

“The illicit activity seen in local massage parlors brings not only prostitution into our community, but also the possibility of human trafficking. These crimes are an affront to the safe, vibrant environment that Brooklyn’s upstanding business owners have worked so hard to create.
