Putting their best feet forward to combat hunger

“Hunger should take a walk!” is the motto for Brooklyn’s fifth Annual “Walk Against Hunger.” The fundraising event, hosted by Reaching-Out Community Services, will take place on Saturday, September 28.

“The purpose of this event is to bring awareness to the shame of hunger,” said Tom Neve, founder and director of Reaching-Out, which runs a food pantry on New Utrecht Avenue that helps local families put dinner on the table.

Over the years, Neve has been encouraged by the overwhelmingly positive response, from both participants and the community.

“It’s one of the ways we unite together. Everybody recognizes that this program has become a vital service,” Neve said. “They’re encouraged that we bring hope and capture support. So it’s always a positive effect.” Last year, over 400 people participated in the noble cause.

This year, there will be some alterations made to the walk, specifically the location. “Normally, we do the walk at Dyker Park, but it felt like we were talking to trees,” joked Neve. Instead, the walk, which kicks off at 11 a.m., will start at 13th Avenue and 86th Street, head to Bay Ridge Avenue and then return to the Knights of Columbus parking lot. Registration for the walk begins at 9:30 a.m. at the KOC parking lot.

“Walk Against Hunger” has also brought prominent figures to participate. “Last year, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz showed up,” recalled Neve. Although it is uncertain who will be in attendance this year, participants can expect several community activists, along with sponsor Transit Managerial, which will be receive an honorary plaque.

Local companies have also joined in to lend a helping hand. “We’ve had Modell’s Sporting Goods and Health Plus come by to give out water bottles. Banks also came and gave out paraphernalia, “ said Neve.

In addition to the walk, there will be a series of other activities, including live music and gift auctions, as well as a dog coat and blanket drive organized by City Pitties on behalf of dogs still waiting for their forever home and Operation Food Bowl, accepting donations of pet food that are distributed to rescue groups as well as through Reaching-Out’s food pantry. Those attending are also encouraged to bring their dogs to the walk.
